India has a very old architectural culture. It is now 21st century, and we are seeing there is modern impact on the architectural constructions. The footprints of this blend are in the history of nation. In the past 20th century, India was going through many changes. It is said that 20th century was the revolutionary period in the history of India. European culture has made huge impact on the architectural culture of India. It was in the 1920s that the idea of modern architecture was born. As India was under British rule, British introduced the modern touch with blend of ancient Indian architecture.
As a student of architecture, one must be aware of Indian architectural culture. Now a days, there are many architecture colleges in Pune that emphasize on the study and tour of ancient Indian architecture. It is said that Indian modern architecture is influenced by, Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. But the roots of Modernism in India were more like an overall approach to life. It meant designing positively, improvising it, being progressive and innovative. There were two visionary minds behind all this namely, Nehru and Tagore.
In the era of British, public buildings were the area of interest. Some of the great architectural examples of British colonial period are still there such as, Victoria Station in Mumbai, Bombay University and Victoria memorial in Calcutta. The architecture was particularly designed, giving flanking view of the viceroy’s palace.
Lavish colonnades, open verandas, slender windows, chhajjas and cornices jaalis and pavilion were used at the same time as decorative elements from typical historic Indian architecture. British were successful in the making of a blend of both the cultures.
Fusion of different cultures is what is in trend these days. There were as such no facilities to develop the art of designing but the architecture of that time made it possible through their strong blueprints and visionary mind. Architecture colleges in Ravet promote the study of ancient architectural study. Texture is the evident look or feel of the surface of an art object. Texture is a tangible property and requires touching to be appreciated.

In early period architectural studies was only for those who can afford it. Most of the time students use to prefer USA for the studies of architect. There are some immigrants like, Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, who emigrated from fascist Germany just for the sake of studying architecture. Habib Rehman was in the first generation of Indian architects, who came back from America with the new optimized influence at the Bombay School and offered free services to the newly independent country.
One of the most exceptionally talented architects who returned from MIT in Cambridge/Boston in the 1950s was Charles Correa. He had work experience under Minoru Yamasaki in Detroit, designed the World Trade Center in New York.
Charles Correa developed his work in the 20th century. His 1963 memorial for Mahatma Gandhi in Ahmedabad, which is reminiscent of Kahn’s design for the Trenton Bath House, marks the beginning of his mature work.

Correa is the most important representative of his generation and still India’s most significant contemporary architect. Raj Rewal was educated in Delhi and London; he was influenced at an early stage by the Japanese Metabolites, but later found his own identity in India’s history, pursuing the concept of Modernism based on tradition.
